A compact treasure trove of exquisite Newar art and Buddhist-Hindu harmony. |
Patan (also called Lalitpur, or “City of Fine Arts”) is renowned for its rich artistic heritage and peaceful coexistence of Buddhist and Hindu influences. The Durbar Square here is packed with temples and palaces, including Krishna Mandir, with its stone carvings, and the ornate Golden Temple (Hiranya Varna Mahavihar). The Patan Museum inside the former royal palace is one of the best in South Asia, offering context and depth into Nepal’s iconography and craftsmanship. Just beyond the square, narrow alleys lead to hidden courtyards where artisans still cast metal statues, a testament to living heritage.
