Located just a few kilometers north of Lhasa, Sera Monastery is one of the “Great Three” Gelug university monasteries, alongside Drepung and Ganden. Founded in 1419, it has played a pivotal role in Tibetan Buddhism, education, and culture.

Historical Overview

Sera Monastery was established by Jamchen Chojey, a disciple of Je Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug tradition. It quickly grew into a center of Buddhist learning, attracting thousands of monks dedicated to rigorous study and practice.

The monastery’s name means “Wild Roses,” referencing the wild rose bushes that once surrounded the site.

The Debating Tradition

One of Sera’s most famous features is its daily monk debates, held in the monastery’s courtyard, typically in the afternoon.

These debates are an intense and lively method of learning, where monks challenge each other on Buddhist philosophy, logic, and scripture. The rapid-fire questions, clapping, and expressive gestures make this a captivating experience for visitors.

Architectural and Artistic Features

The complex houses many temples, assembly halls, and chapels adorned with colorful murals and intricate woodwork.

Important buildings include the Big Assembly Hall, the Abbot’s residence, and various colleges specializing in ritual arts, medicine, and logic.
