Just beyond Kopan on a quieter ridge sits Pullahari Monastery, the seat of the Jamgön Kongtrul lineage (Karma Kagyu tradition). With manicured gardens, open terraces, and soaring prayer halls, Pullahari is where Kathmandu’s chaos feels far away. The monastery is famed for its morning chants, line-by-line Tibetan inscriptions, and exquisite murals that wrap the upper lhakhang (temple).

Pullahari regularly hosts short retreats, Sunday talks, and practice sessions (check ahead; schedules change). Many visitors come simply to sit in its meditative courtyards, watch the monks debate on sunny afternoons, and soak in the silence. Photography is generally permitted in outdoor spaces; ask before entering shrine rooms.

If you want the peace of a hilltop monastery near Kathmandu—without the foot traffic of bigger names—Pullahari is your sanctuary.
