Upper Mustang is unlike any other trekking region in Nepal. Often called the “Last Forbidden Kingdom,” its arid trans-Himalayan landscape hides deep cultural roots, centuries-old cave monasteries, and some of the most unique perspectives of the Himalayas — especially from a north-facing viewpoint.

While the focus here is often on red cliffs, sky caves, and medieval villages, Upper Mustang also reveals a dramatic Himalayan skyline. These are the key mountains you’ll encounter along the trail, along with their stories and viewpoints.

1. Nilgiri North, Central, and South (7,061 m highest)The Blue Mountains

  • Seen From: Most parts of the trail between Kagbeni, Ghemi, and Lo Manthang
  • Name Meaning: “Nilgiri” means “Blue Mountain”
  • Visual Identity: Towering icy wall dominating the southern horizon of Upper Mustang

2. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m)The White Mountain

  • World Rank: 7th highest mountain
  • Seen From: Southern approach to Mustang, especially from Muktinath and Kagbeni
  • Spiritual Significance: Considered sacred in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions
  • Impression: Often framed with the Kali Gandaki Gorge in the foreground — dramatic contrast

3. Tilicho Peak (7,134 m)The Hidden Wall

  • Seen From: Visible from high ridges like Chogo La or areas near Yara and Tangge
  • Trivia: Overlooks the Tilicho Lake in the Annapurna region but appears on Mustang’s skyline

4. Tukuche Peak (6,920 m)The Lesser-Known Dhaulagiri Neighbor

5. Thorung Peak (6,144 m)Near Thorung La Pass

6. Yakwakang and Damodar HimalUpper Mustang’s Own Mountain Range

  • Seen From: Lo Manthang, Dhi, Yara, and Charang regions
  • Spiritual Significance: The Damodar Kunda region is sacred to Hindus — believed to be a source of the Kali Gandaki River and home to fossilized shaligram stones

7. Mustang Himal and Upper Nar–Phu Peaks

  • Seen From: Eastern Mustang rim and from passes like Mui La and Lo La
  • Visual Appeal: Rugged, sharp ridgelines often snow-dusted even in summer
